EXPLORING SAN ANDRES, MANILA

This is the photograph I had submitted as my entry for Canon’s Shoot & Run’s Splendor of Manila category, which made it among its top fifty entries; whereas, the one immediately below was for the Faces of Manila. In all honesty, I was surprised the former was chosen to be included in the top 50, for there were far more superior shots by the other photographers.

Except for the top photo that was taken at Roxas Boulevard, the rest were from the San Andres area of Manila. I truly appreciate its residents for allowing me to hang out with them, as well as take pictures of their jovial faces and colorful neighborhood. Thank you!

I like the faces of the children. Isn't that Don Henrico on the first picture?

Haha! The iconic symbols of Victoria Court and Hotel Sogo are there in the background. I went to the former for a Christmas party two days ago. With the thought of being in a motel, it was kinky at first, but, being the wholesome people that we *ahem* are, the excitement wore off fast.

Thanks, Irene!

Yes, those San Andres folks really enjoyed being photographed. It was fun.

Oo nga, Iskoo. Believe ako kasi napansing ko malinis and lugar nila. Maganda siguro pamamalakad ng kanilkang barangay official.

Tuwang tuwa ako pag nakakakita ng mga fruit stand!

I think it is Don Henrico, Toe :) The children are the most excited subjects when it comes to picture taking. They would even plead with you to take their photographs. They're great!

Thanks, Basey! Sana nga isang katutak na bata naka tambay sa fruit stand, no? Para isang magandang picture :)

Aha! So it's Dave who noticed first ... hahaha! Huh? A Christmas party at Victoria's Court? Wow! :)

Thanks, Analyse! Are you here for the holidays or in France?

Have a Happy and Colorful Christmas everybody!!!!!!

Were those shots in and around the San Andres Market, where Dakota-Harrison jeeps go though?

Yes, this is correct, Amadeo. Actually, the shot of the boys on top of the truck was taken right in the market -- heavy traffic on that narrow stretch of a road.

Eric:

It makes sense getting your "faces of Manila" in that area, which has always been a beehive of activities for Malate and even Paco.

I can quite recall busy Leveriza St. which borders the market on one side.

A half-brother who has inherited property in that area tells me it continues to be doing brisk business.

One thing for sure that is gone are the street names after the different states of the USA. Replaced by local names.

Wonder if you are aware why they were named after different US states in the first place.

I don't recall the names of the streets as having been taken from the names of states in America, Amadeo. However, I do recall an uncle and his family living at Leveriza Street. He played the clarinet for Tirso Cruz's band at Manila Hotel. But having been gone for many years, this whole area looks totally unfamiliar to me.
