VYING FOR A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD
The Philippines is vying to become the new record holder for the world’s longest painting on continuous canvas. Their theme is marine life.
The current Guinness World record holder is the United Arab Emirates whose artwork was done in Abu Dhabi on March 21, 2005 and set a record of 2,978.4 meters (9,771.6 feet).
At last count, the Philippine entry has only 1,700 plus meters of canvas painted; the goal is 5,000 meters. Iran, from what I was recently told, is a fierce competitor aiming for a 10,000 meter goal. And with a deadline of September 7th, the current record alone is looking mighty tough to beat for the Philippines. An extension is being requested by all participating countries.
Those who wish to participate may still do so and register in one of two ways:
One is to sign up for free and for doing so will be given a Certificate of Participation.
The other involves a 1,000 peso fee, but comes with certain benefits such as Certificate of Participation from OTSAA, Guinness World Records, World Art Heritage from UNESCO; souvenir items (t-shirts, pins, and etc.); lifetime membership I OTSAA’s longest painting club and considered qualified for special awards; inclusion of name in the Guinness coffee table book; and 50% discount on all commemorative items on sale.
The official venue where this monumental endeavor is being executed is on the 4th floor of SM North (or West) Mall.

I am surprised that our chances are so bleak. With all those schools & children it should be easy to win...
But again I am not sure the public is well informed. If I had been aware of this I would have enrolled my son to paint a piece of canvass.-

I totally agree with you Major Tom, but what they should have done is arrange for a traveling venue -- one week in every city, including the provinces throughout the country -- and solicit the support of every local official; hence making it a unified effort on a national level.
As it is, it just sits at an SM mall.
I'm really surprised why not much publicity is being conducted about this event, Sidney.
But then again, what many may find prohibitive is that all participants must supply their own painting materials, which could be quite expensive. So, without a sponsor, most kids (and even adults) may be discouraged from joining.
You may want to cover this event tomorrow, Sidney, when they will announce if an extension has been granted. I can't go due to some family obligation.
I haven't been subscribing/reading the newspapers, Kyels, so not sure how much exposure this event has been getting.
But from what I understand, not only high school, but the fine arts department of many colleges in the city had sent their students to join.
I'm still rooting for the Philippines to win it, though.-

Thing is, Niceheart, these paintings weren't done haphazardly just to cover a certain area of canvas to win a contest; everyone I saw seemed putting in a lot of thought and effort into their respective space.
What's even more beautiful a sight to behold is that a number of people -- both young and old alike -- busily collaborating to create something towards a common goal.
There's a lot more amazing works, but I couldn't post them all. Perhaps, Sidney could continue this post, as well as others who may read this entry and be inspired to go over there to check it out, and take some pics :)-

Omigod, Eric! This is awesome! It's beautiful! My son was chosen as one of many students who did mural in their school. They did a fascinating job. Their group won. Of course it's nothing like this.

Wow this is really amazing! These are some things that we should encourage young people to do! Something that inspires them to explore their talents and also positively reflecting a positive image of the Philippines :)

The paintings are in many rolled of canvas as collected from Different Regions in the Philippines. This was happened last October 16, 2006 Spearheaded by the SM North EDSA and other SM City malls in the country , parks and BFAR regional Offices. Thanks to the humble support of BFAR. This will be a big revelation in March 21, 2009 as the UN is celebrating the Earth Day Bell Ringing (A privilage to our UN Ambassador of the Philippines). The adjucator fom GWR will be coming soon to see the final sewing and finishing touches of the Painting. As the Art Miles. Org headed by Ms. Joanne and Mr. Fuoad Tawfilis the Philippines' Longest Painting will be finally save, and to be lead on the Grand Celebration of of International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World by UNESCO on September 21, 2010 in Egypt. The painting is not just a fun World Record attempt to get the title but also the the real meaning of advocacy to World Peace and our fearing climate change that we are experienceing. I am very much positive that the world record is really in our country even not yet been declared by GWR authority. This April 22, 2010 The souther Tagalog region painting (part of the Longest painting) which has a measurement of 188 meters will be up for the public at the Capitol compund in Batangas City in celebration of Earth Day. This is the day the longest painting will launch its final seeming to make it a continuous canvas as preparing starting On June to August 2010 at the Philippine Port Authority Building in Batangas City. The painting will be bring to Cairo, Egypt to lead with other International murals around the world to culminates the 2001-2010: International decade for culture of Peace and Non-violence of the World. To all of suporters and fans of this world treasure, you may track the symbol of Peace and Environment at the Batangas Capitol province compund. Happy Earth Day!!!
