A THOUSAND BEARS FOR THE KIDS OF BICOL
Although Typhoon Reming changed its course and veered away from Metro Manila, the southern provinces, especially Bicol was once again severely hit. Undoubtedly, it must have been another horrific and devastating experience for its residents; worse of all, to the children.
Cathy’s post today is about her concern for these children which prompted her to raise at least a thousand bears to send to Bicol in time for Christmas. She believes play and toys are effective tools for children to heal from shock and trauma. She claims that "stuffed toys have been known to be effective comfort givers in times of extreme stress and fear. To children, stuffed animals are more than toys, they're imaginary friends who are always ready to give comfort or play. They provide a certain amount of security in a sometimes scary world.”
Won’t you please help Cathy raise a thousand bears for Bicol by December 15 so that she can send them out in time for Christmas. She is making arrangements with an NGO in the Albay province to distribute the bears on Christmas day.

If you belong to an organization with a box of at least 30 bears or more to donate to this cause, just send an email to griefisajourney@gmail.com to arrange for a pick-up.

We're starting a fund drive in the office for the victims. It's so sad what's happened, the pictures are so hard to look at. Will continue to offer up prayer for the people of Bicol. Thank you to you and Cathy for your efforts.

Thanks for this post Eric! EVen a fraction of the target number would already mean so much to the hurting children in Bicol. And God works in mysterious ways - imagine, I dodn't even know your mom is from Albay! God bless :)

That is wonderful, Christine. You exemplify the good that is within most Filipinos. Yes, Cathy's initiative and the ensuing help from others will make a lot of Bicol children feel much better during this holiday season. Thanks, Christine!
Yes she is Cathy. And I still have an aunt and uncle living there with their families.

What happened in Albay is terrible. Ther people there can use any possible help. Those bears are a good initiative.

Yes, Sidney ... another calamity in Bicol within a span of only a few months.
This succession of super typhoons in the are is definitely economically crippling, not to mention traumatic for everyone also.-

My question is: are these landslides avoidable? Is there deforestation in those areas? Also, if those areas are just naturally susceptible to landslides, why are houses allowed to be built there? Maybe I missed the reports on that b/c I didn't see anything in the news about that.

Haven't really explored the various factors invloved, Wil. Only thing I know is that the howling wind and immense rainfall were the the main culprits.
My uncle's house in Albay was blown into smitheerens and their livestock totally perished. He and my aunt are living in some shelter as of this moment.
