PHILIPPINE STAR'S FOTOFEST
It was an awe-inspiring three-day event that featured speakers who are veritable masters in their respective area of expertise in photography -- Jun de Leon, Val Rodriguez, Romy Gacad, Alex Baluyut Jose Enrique Soriano, Gunther Deichmann, Wig Tysmans, Dominique James, Mark Floro, Ibarra Deri, and John Mateos Ong. And there was also the award winner videographer, Jason Magbanua.
The event was organized for the Philippine Star by Chito Vecina, who at the young age of fifteen pursued a career as a photojournalist egged on by his father who was at that time a chief photo editor in one of Manila's leading broadsheets. It was the strength of Chito's friendship with these great talents (who were also neophytes at that time) that pulled them all under one roof -- Greenbelt 2's Cinema 1 -- to share their knowledge with delegates (some of whom came from as far as Bohol, Iloilo, and Bicol) who became richer for the insight gained in those three days.
The entire event was moderated by Arlyn de la Cruz, an intrepid journalist and anchorwoman. She attained global attention for having gained access and an exclusive interview with Martin and Gracia Burnham during their captivity by the Abu Sayyaf. Her video reportage was picked by the CBS News, Reuters, and many other international media organizations worldwide.
Suffice it to say, FotoFest was the most powerful photography event I had attended in the Philippines. It was well-organized; each resource speaker an undisputed master of his art, every delegate already making plans to attend the next year's event.
I will feature individual articles on these speakers, as well as more on Arlyn and Chito in the upcoming days.

Romy Gacad of Agence France Presse, a Pulitzer Prize nominee and whose photographs have graced the cover of Time and other leading magazines, showing some of hisnotable pictures taken within the conflict zones of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Well, we don't have photo fest here (I've never seen one) but I think it's going to be great if I ever get to experience such an event.

Photowalker said... I was there yesterday. Congratulations!! Saw your picture Mr. Issac, very nice. It was a nice event, though I came late in the afternoon, I was still able to enjoy foto fest. And I saw this Dicapack & Gorillapod that gave me a couple of ideas for my future blog posts.

They raffled off one of those gorilla pods that you like, Photowalker. The young man from Bohol got it.
I also won -- a coffee mug and T-shirt, which I tried to talk the guy who got the gorilla pod to do a trade with me. No such luck, though ... hehehe.

I know some of the local resource speakers (photography practitioners and teachers) do travel to other Asian countries to conduct seminars, Kyels.
You may want to get the consensus of how many else in your city who'd want to attend such seminars. I can then hook you up with some local organizers.-

Ooh, so you've been in that Philstar exhibit at Glorietta! One recent striking frontpage photo comes to mind: it showed the little daughter of Kiko Pangilinan and Sharon Cuneta mingling with local children attending one of her father's provincial election sorties. Truly great photography that, I must admit, appreciated more due to my frequenting photoblogs like yours :)
And you have new contacts from the Star! I'm glad I know someone with considerable clout like you, Señor E; because, interestingly, I have just posted an entry about their website that they might want to consider, hehehe.-
