AHPADA INTERNATIONAL ARTS & CRAFTS EXPO

The 1st AHPADA International Arts & Crafts Expo was held over the weekend in SMX beside SM Mall of Asia.

The Department of Tourism, Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Foreign Affairs have joined hands with Henry Sy’s SM Mall of Asia to usher the event headed by former Tourism Secretary Dr. Mina T. Gabor.

ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association (AHPADA) was formerly inaugurated in Jakarta in March of 1981 as a forum for both the government and private sectors concerned to meet and to complement each other in the promotion and development of arts and craft activities. Its mission is to preserve and improve the staturs of craftspeople within and outside the Asia Pacific region.

The founding members of AHPADA are Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. Joining AHPADA in September 1999 were Singapore, Bruenei Darusalam, Camboadia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam.

And to entertain the many visitors of this first AHPADA exposition, there were cultural performances presented by Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia. The National Commission for Culture and Arts produced the Philippine cultural presentation segment in which some of the participants were the Philippine Ballet Theater, Ramon Magsaysay Chorale, Quezon City Orchestra, Banda Kawayan, and Earthsavers Ensemble.

Nice shots, S.E. I visited the show on Saturday afternoon, and was entertained by the Ifugao dance, and a quartet who sang Harana songs---I literally had goosebumps! Also did some shopping at the show...a bag from Thailand, slippers from Vietnam, more slippers from Marikina booth, a shawl from Malaysia, soaps from Domicillo booth. I also took pictures of the T'boli weaver...mas magaganda lang shots mo. hehehe

I made a mistake pala---I thought SMX was across the supermarket. Blame it on my lack of sense of direction. :-) Confused pa rin ako sa left and right...sa MOA pa kaya?

Yes, Mimi, bukas na! Nalaman ko ito kay Luna Miranda. Meron ding isang magandan fair itong weekend -- more on furniture designs.

Yes, SMX might compete against Megatrade and World Trade Center.

I like them, too, Sidney. I have this weakness for lamps and lighting fixtures.

With the holiday season fast approaching, there seems to be lots of this kind of events.

Many thanksagain, Luna Miranda, for it was through your blog I discovered about SMX :)

Okay lang, kasi I enjoyed walking around MOA -- excellent exercise din naman.

Great entertainment shows they had. The ballet was great :)

Thanks, BW! There seems to be more and more well-made and high quality products that our feloow Pinoys are creating/producing which make excellent export products as well. Something for all of us to be proud of :)

Those hats, Pusa, would make excellent home decor as well -- like a group of three hanging on the wall.

And that chair! Gusto kong subukang upuan pero wala ako nakitang floor sample.

If you like these lamps, Carla, you will love those artsy light fixtures that will be exhibited by this Pinoy artist here in Manila soon. I will keep everyone posted about it once I receive the details.

Yeah, that rattan (??) chair looks so good to look at and sit on! Sana they would exhibit outside of ASEAN, like Australia? Hehehee. I am sure they want to promote these. I've seen those rattan floor lamps here... much much better than those at Ikea.

That would indeed be a wonderful idea, Mario. And I'm sure many Australians would love to get their hands on some of these beautiful products.

Philippine furniture is showcased once a year at the Cebu and Manila International Furniture shows. This trade show is being held every year, late Feb to early March. Venue for the 2008 Manila show will be the SMX---it used to be at the WTC. There is also an annual trade fair for SMEs organized by DTI through NTF (National Trade Fair), usually held at the Megatrade, where pieces of furniture and home decor are for sale. This is usually held around March.

Philippine manufacturers exhibit at the HK, Singapore and Dubai furniture shows. Please check out www.citem.com.ph, www.manilanow.ph, www.dti.gov.ph, and Cebu X.

Oh I see. Many thanks for this information, Luna.

By the way, your article on this event is definitely more informative. I enjoyed reading it.

Are you by any chance a designer?

Hindi designer ang nasa job description ko e (hehehe), but dipping my fingers into designing is sometimes necessary. Most of the time, I give design ideas to designers I work with...I have the eye for design but lack the sense of symmetry.

I market Philippine-made products to the international market.

Wow! That's an interesting job. You also provide a great service to our local craftsmen in helping them prepare their creations/ for export.

By the way, for any event that you may again have in Manila, please advise me in advance via email so I could cover them. Many thanks, Luna!
