VICHYSSOISE, ANYONE?





















I've been intensely craving for vichyssoise (cold potato) soup since recovering from a flu that knocked me out for a few days last week. Rhoda suspected I might have suffered from gastrointestinal flu due to the other symptoms I experienced (she suffered from a bad case of the cold).

Anyway, unlike in New York -- where I could just call a French restaurant in the neighborhood and have a large bowl of it delivered to my apartment -- I might have to travel all the way to Makati just to grab a bowl of vichyssoise soup. And as most friends of mine know by now, I'm not too fond of driving in and around Makati City due to its horrendous traffic and ever-changing traffic schemes.

My other option to appease this craving is to read a recipe of it. No, I need not prepare it; merely reading its recipe will somehow fulfill my desire. Weird, huh? But that's me. You see, I usually lose my appetite for whatever it is I cook or plan to cook.

Incidentally, I took up several cooking classes over at Diliman in Quezon City, including baking. During those times I was practicing what I was learning from school, everything that I would whip up was savored by everyone, except me. I did, however, immensely enjoy preparing those meals, though I was never one to feast on them.

So, to satisfy my desire for vichyssoise soup, all I have to do is feast my eyes on a recipe published by about.com. Problem solved; for now, that is.

Maybe you should just get a taxi and go over to Makati for the soup that you are craving for?

Not an easy proposition, either, Kyels.

Most cabdrivers refuse to venture into Makati during the day, and most Makati-based cabs would prefer fares within Makati only.

In NYC, Jhay, chicken soup is often referred to as the Jewish penicillin, for it's often recommended to those having bouts with the flu or cold.

The matzoh ball soup, on the other hand, I much prefer :)

The Chinese-style chicken and egg soup you speak of is referred to as "egg drop soup" at any NY Chinese restaurant!

the old standby chicken noodle soup works well for me, although really i make it with turkey so its turkey noodle soup.

the cook almost never eats what he cooks, maybe only just a bite or two from his creations. =) i'm also like that. i think it's because i have already inhaled its "spirit" as i call it. ^^

Yes, Campbell's, Dine. Most friends in NYC usually have a couple stashed in the cupboard for when a cold suddenly hits.

Knorr's I haven't tried, yet.

I guess, Carla, if I ever want to maintain a slim physique, I should get a job as a cook, even a short order one ... hehehe. But you're right, I've heard of others who hardly touch what they cook.

Vichyssoise (veeshi swaaz) - tama ba? :)

Masarap nga ito, sooo creamy! Nakatikim ako minsan sa isang kasal sa Shangrila.. But the name was foreign to me, I could hardly pronounce it so what I did was I took home the entreé card and looked up the word in the dictionary... hehehe! Then I realized, French word nga pala, so you only have to look at the 'ch', which is pronounced 'sh' in French, and the 'soise' syllable as 'swaaz" Ayan, naging French lesson tuloy comment ko.. LOL!

But I looked into the link - maraming steps ang pag-prepare. You need to use a food processor pa. Kaya Eric, puwede ba, instant noodles na lang? haha!

Thanks for the French lessons, Rhoda! Inngit nga ako kay Francesca at Analyse kasi husay nila mag-French.

Anyway, talagang matrabaho itong soup na ito, pero if you love creamy soups, New England chowder is another alternative and it is incredible, especially if made from scratch with fresh ingredients! There's another version, Manhattan clam chowder without the cream (not so good).

Oo nga, instant noodles na lang para mas madali :) Tama na pangangarap :)

What's with soup man? Chicken noodle soup does work for colds and mild flu! Amazing :)

Clam chowder - the first dish I ordered when I was in Boston :)

i checked the recipe from your link, and it sure looked addicting - thanks to the butter and the heavy cream hehe!

like BW, the 1st thing i tried in boston was their clam chowder. and it was a real feast, hard to forget :D

and wow on the cooking lessons. maybe you should share/post one of your recipes, plus the pics :)

i usually popped a can of chicken soup when i am sick, which rarely happens (thank God!). what about drinking a glass of kalamansi juice sweetened with honey.

Okay, I'll dig up some old notes and post some of my favorite easy-to-cook recipes, Eye; nothing grand.

I remember when we used to go to Maine for the weekend. I'd come back feeling stuffed for days on account of all those clam chowders and lobsters.

I used to do that, too, Belle -- just grab a can of Campbell's whenever feeling sick.

Kalamansi juice with honey sounds good. Wait a minute ... they have those bottled and can be purchased at any local supermarket. All you need to do is add some water.
