PEEK-A-BOO

This young boy and his dog were among those who used to add color to the life under the LRT along the pedestrianized Rizal Avenue between Plaza Lacson and Claro M. Recto Avenue. However, now with vehicular traffic back on this strip, I wonder where the neighborhood children safely play these days.

Meanwhile, with purses as high as $100,000.00, authorities estimate about 40,000 people in the United States engage in the illegal blood sport of professional dogfighting. CNN reports that the recent indictment against Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three other people highlight the problem.

Dogfighting is illegal in all 50 states.
Nonetheless, President Bush signed a bill last May which makes the federal law against dogfighting even tougher with penalties escalated to felony level. The law bans interstate commerce, import and export related to animal fighting activities. Violators can now be sentenced to three years in jail and a $250,000 fine as opposed to the previous maximum sentence of only a year in jail.

This entry is my 500th post. I wish to thank all my fellow bloggers, friends and readers whose visits, comments, and emails inspire my tireless gallivanting and photographing of my beloved city of Manila.

Maraming salamat po!

Happy 500th post! Congratulations, Eric! I haven't even reached my 200th. But I promise to throw a party when I do. hehehe.

Dogfighting? I think it's more gross than cockfighting or any other form of animal fight games.

Wala na bang ibang mapaglibangan ang mga tao?

Wow! 500 posts? I'm amazed and saludo ako sa iyo. You've been posting very interesting stuff about Manila and your photos tells the stories as well. I love the expression on that little puppy. I hope the boy and his puppy found a batter place to hang out. Pit Bull breeding here in the states are getting out of control! most of them are bred for fighting and are very vicious and are dangerous to have around your neighborhood. Prison inmates who are allowed to breed dogs in some maximum facilities do breed fighting dogs and get away with selling them out to dog fight afficionados. I love dogs. My faithful Bull mastiff and Belgian Sheperd both age 16 human years, passed away 2 weeks away from each other last February. I still have my Australian Sheepdog, a miniature doberman pincher and a Chiuaua/miniature pinscher mixed wrecking havoc in my house and backyard.

You sure you've counting? Baka naman 501st na, hehe......congrats for such hard work, wish you're getting paid for doing this...
Wish like hell Vick goes to prison but you're very much aware how these filthy rich athletes are, hire the best esquire they can find and poke all kinds of technicalities on the case, and he's back to Atlanta playing QB
on opening day. Much like Pinas I reckon. Cheers and goodhealth...

Thank you, Rhoda!

By the way, in some province of ours, horse fighting is quite a pastime. And neither horse stop fighting until one drops dead. Ed Santiago, our photojournalism instructor, showed us some photos he took of it; I could hardly look, though.

Can you believe that?

But then kids do it with salagubang :)

Ano ba 'yan?

Thank you, too, Carla!

I tell you, I first saw this puppy who just ran and stop right in front of me. He is so cute. I just had to pull out my camera to take his pic. And before I knew it a bunch of kids gathered around us. Of course, they, too, demanded a picture :)

I hope so, too, Pete. Where else, I thought, would this boy and his puppy freely run around without the risk of a jeepney or tricycle hitting them. Gosh ...

I only had a cocker spaniel that lived for 17 years; thanks to Eukanuba!

There was a time in Manhattan that I really got paranoid when word got around that some thugs from uptown were snatching dogs about the same size as my 17-pound dog in the neighborhood. Those abducted dogs were supposedly taken to the Bronx and used as practice targets for those vicious pit bulls. I was so alarmed that I started carrying a baseball bat with me whenever I took my dog out for a walk at night. I even joined evening group walks with other dog owners on my block to thwart any such abductions.

Boy, you really have a collection, huh?

Actually, TruBlue, blogger does all the reminders and counting of such ... hehehe. But I was astounded that I had done that many posts already.

Yeah, that QB guy ought to be severely punished for his crime. However, like Scooter Libby .... hehehe.

Thank you, TruBlue!

Congratulations, Eric! for your 500th posts. Marami pa akong babasahin pala... hahaha.

I don't have anything much to say about where those children along Recto/Avenida should play, there got to be some other areas close to their neighborhood since most of those kids don't live near that commercial place anyways.
And about those animal blood sport, I just can't believe people are still doing this on animals.
But I realized, I was an aficionado also of Sabong in my younger days and on the lighter side of sabong, our competitor always have tinolang manok courtesy of our losing streak. Malas talaga sa sugal, so we quit that game.

Maraming salamat, Traje.

Hahaha ... poor you, Reyd!

I feel sorry for the pit bulls. Now, they have this ugly image of being ferocious canines.

But come to think of it, that cute dog in the old TV series, Our Gang or Little Rascals, was a pit bull.

I can't watch sabong, either. I feel sorry for those chickens ... hehehe. But I was told those sabong cocks have tough meat and must be boiled on low fire for an extended amount of time.

Those kids, Reyd, have no playground (like the ones in all neighborhoods in the States). Most of them come from Quiapo, I think.
