JULIE LLUCH, ARTIST AND SCULPTOR
The bronze statue of former Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson along Roxas Boulevard was created by Julie Lluch. She was born in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte and completed a degree in Philosophy at the University of Sto. Tomas.
She held her first one-woman show at Sining Kamalig in 1977. Ensuing exhibits were held in venues like Galerie Bleue, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and Liongoren Art Gallery. Her 1997 show Art and Faith was held at Galleria Duemila. She also joined numerous international group exhibits such as in Fukuoka, Brisbane, Tokyo, Jakarta and Bangkok.
In 1997, Julie Lluch won the Araw ng Maynila award for Sculpture. She has also won awards for her work as a set designer and as an experimental filmmaker. She produced and acted in the prize-winning short film "Yuta, Earth Art of Julie Lluch-Dalena”.
Besides the sculpture of Mayor Lacson, she has also created a statue of Ninoy Aquino; however, not sure if she had also done the statue of Mayor Lacson on Plaza Lacson (formerly Plaza Goiti).

THANK YOU!
What a fine tribute to a great man!
A feisty no nonsense mayor, I remember the man very well.
BTW, Mayor Lim was a Police Officer when Mayor Lacson was in office.
I like the bottom photo very much.
That is so much like the laid back mayor kickin back with an issue of the Manila Times early in the morning.- pusa said...
love love the 2nd photo! =) he look real in there sitting his newspaper

That is a nice concept Ms Lluch has made of "eternalizing" Mayor Lacson rather than make him stand on a pedestal...like a well, statue :-)!
I like the last shot very much!- Unknown said...
I love the antique feel of the second photo. Reminds me an old movie...

The magic of post processing, Luna ... hehehe.
I had wrongly set the white balance of the camera when I took the shot; thus the image came out too blue, but I like the composition very much, though. So I post process it to sepia which turned out to be a lot more pleasing.
Thanks, glad you like it :)- Señor Enrique said...
I, too, was very much impressed at the way Ms. Lluch created this sculpture, Bernadette. And the way people could sit next to it ala Ronald McDonald ... hehehe.
Thanks!- Señor Enrique said...
I was going to trash that image, Pusa, but it was a good thing I thought about transposing it to s sepia tone. :)
Thank you!- Señor Enrique said...
Yes, Pete, he was supposedly the finest mayor Manila ever had. Didn't know Lim was a mere foot soldier during his tenure :)
I guess, that's the reason why I like this statue a lot -- it reminds me of my father reading his Manila Times in the morning :)
Thnaks, Pete!- Amadeo said...
The Lluch family is very old and prominent family of Iligan, many members getting into politics. A brother or two went to school with us in Ateneo de Cagayan.
But I wondered if Julie Lluch had any special connection with Mayor Arsenic who was also Visayan.- Señor Enrique said...
Thanks for sharing that piece of information about the Lluch family, Amedeo.
And as we all know, the Arsenic happened to be an Athenean as well.- KJS said...
I absolutely love these two photos.

I like how that sculpture made Mayor Lacson accessible to the populace. It reminds me of a statue of Fr. De la Costa in our college campus. The late priest-historian stands at ground level, and most students do pose for a picture with him. They say he was really approachable for students in his time.

I also like that particular depiction, Dave. This way, people are able to somehow interact with it -- sort of a touchable piece of art. Besides, we have enough towering monuments where we can only crane our necks to appreciate :)

Hi guys,
I was just surfing around when i chanced upon this blogsite. The woman in this thread happens to by aunt. I stayed at her QC home for quite some time. It's really interesting to read thru the posts. Gives me a different perspective to her.
I also am lucky enough to see those works of hers in the early stages. I even assisted her once in the firing of one of her works in a giant kiln in Iligan. Now that i read these posts, I feel like i helped her reach this point. you all have a nice day
