CANON’S SHOOT & RUN EVENT
It was a wonderful event blessed with great weather that was attended by about three hundred photography enthusiasts vying for almost half a million pesos in prizes. The main subject was the City of Manila and its people. The event began with the usual registration at 9:30 am. Each participant was handed a Canon bag filled with goodies — red cap, white T-shirt, energy drink, and a copy of People Asia magazine. Everyone was required to wear the shirt and cap imprinted with the Canon Shoot & Run logo during the event.
Promptly at 10:30 am, after a brief opening statement by the president of Canon Philippines, our first assignment was announced — to shoot a landscape that depicts the splendor of the City of Manila. We were given about three hours to accomplish this task; after which, we returned to the venue, Palacio de Manila, to download our single photo entry from our camera’s memory card into a designated laptop station. At 2:30 pm, we were given our second assignment — to shoot a portrait of a uniquely Manilan face.
Since I have a Nikon dSLR, I knew my prospect of winning is nil so I simply regarded the entire event as a fun opportunity to hook up with fellow photography enthusiasts and trade some pointers. Logically, it would be silly of Canon to spend all that money only to award prizes to photographs taken by those with their competitors’ cameras. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every minute of it.
At the end of the day, with everyone’s second entry downloaded into the awaiting laptops provided by Acer, there was a free buffet and some live music provided by Snare A. Mata and her band. There were also an ample supply of San Miguel beer, but much to my surprise, didn't see too many taking advantage of the free offering; I guess most were driving home. At around 9:00 pm, the winners were announced. The winning photos truly deserved their prizes, but personally, I feel everyone came out a winner for having enjoyed such a friendly and festive occasion provided by Canon.
Here are some pictures from the event:

Looks like a fun event to participate.
Why I haven't heard of this? hahaha.- Señor Enrique said...
HI Basey! I took many pictures; one made it as among the top 50 of the morning shoot assignment. I will post some of the pics in the coming entries.
Thanks and you have a wonderful week, too, ok?- Señor Enrique said...
Found out about it, Ferdz, through:
www.shutter.box.com.ph
This is a very informative blog site about photography. I'm sorry ... I should have echoed his announcement with an entry on my site, too.
It was really a fun and delightful event. Anyone and everyone I would run into out in the streets who were part of it I could easily strike a conversation with like some old friend; they respond in kind. The feeling of comraderie was more prevalent than as of competitors. I must give credit to the people behind this event for having set such a warm and friendly tone throughout the entire affair!
I wish you and Tito were there. Both of you would have loved it.- Photo Cache said...
that was a great event, must be loads of fun. yeah, i guess the brand thing is a big factor huh. its like you cant go to a levi's audition wearing a lee jeans.
we'll get 'em next time, eh?- Señor Enrique said...
That's right, PC! However, Canon has to be given credit for still having welcomed those with competing gear for the sake of unity and friendship amongst all photigraphy enthuiasts.

Hehehehe.. taking a D80 on a canon contest. :)
Looked like a posh event a live band plus food ? hmm... sales are good then.- Señor Enrique said...
Yes, S.A., I felt sort of like an outcast ... hehehe. But I whipped out my good 'ol CANON point & shooter and used it to document the event as featured in above photos, except for the last one with the band which I took with the D80.

You definitely made the right choice, Anonymous! Yours was more spiritual than anything else; however, Canon promises another bigger event for next year (yes ... this will now be an annual event!).
- Señor Enrique said...
Next year, Iskoo, sumama ka kasi talagang masaya at friendly lahat ang mga participants!

Wow, parang ang saya at ang dami pang freebies. And you guys also get to promote the City of Manila with your pictures.

Ay talagang napakasaya, Toe. It also came with the blessing of the mayor of Manila; thus, we were able to shoot anywhere :)

It looks like a grand experience for photography hobbyists. I am sure there should be a fun event like this for years to come. Sana you could win this one next year bro.

Many thanks for the good wish, Major Tom; however, let's be realistic...so many talented Pinoys!!!! Ang gagaling, really. Nakakatuwa.
Although I didn't come home with a prize from Canon, I did make some new friends, though. That's my big prize ... hehehe!- Señor Enrique said...
You're probably right, Tito! Mr. Chua and the Canon folks are tight! Sana magtagpo tayo sa isang event ng Pipho.
Yes, Manila City Hall had just gone through a cool make-over complete with lamp posts along its sides. Ang ganda! I should take some evening shots of it too!- carlotta1924 said...
finally, i can see the pics! there was something wrong with my compu for the past few days and the pics couldn't load.
anyway, how do you come across these events? that must have been really exciting.- Señor Enrique said...
Usually through the people from my photography classes as well as from photo enthusiast blogsites.
What I will do Carla is advise you of any future events like this so you and your brother can come join us, okay? It is really fun, plus you get to meet lots of friendly folks who are into taking pictures.
