109th INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND
Ang bayan ko'y tanging ikaw
Pilipinas Kong Mahal
Ang puso ko at buhay man
Sa iyo'y ibibigay
Tungkulin kong gagampanan
na lagi kang paglingkuran
Ang laya mo'y babantayan
Pilipinas kong Hirang...
(English)
I love my own native land
Philippines, my Philippines
To thee I give my heart and hand
Philippines, my Philippines.
The trees that crown thy mountains grand,
the seas that beat upon thy strand
Awake my heart to thy command,
Philippines, my Philippines

This song brought back fond memories of my childhood when we used to sing this in school. I wonder why this isnt sung as much as it used to be.
Great photos as always, senorE!- mgaputonimimi said...

Señor E, I'd like to share the Independence Day entry from last year. One of my earlier/shorter writings.
- Señor Enrique said...
Dave, many thanks for sharing! It must've been a very touching scene to see those young children endure the downpour.
Everyone should read this entry!- Señor Enrique said...
We used to sing this song often in elementary school, Gita. It sounds like a lullaby, doesn't it, but to me, hauntingly beautiful
Thanks much!- Señor Enrique said...
Bakit kaya, Mimi?
Sa Amerika naman pinahinto ang pagdadasal sa mga simula ng mga klase.
Ano ba yan?- said...
I've visited Kawit last week & they are preparing for the big day, the shrine was repainted & works are being done. Since June 12 is a regular working day, I can't imagine the traffic situation in Kawit.

I used to sing this when we were young.
Lovely photos!- Señor Enrique said...
I bet Kawait is really teeming with visitors this holiday weekend, Ricky. I'd like to go there but discouraged by the possible traffic snarls.
You did the right thing by going there days ahead.- Señor Enrique said...
Thank you, Ipanema!
I love singing this song when I was a kid. It's lovely.- said...
We also used to sing this in elementary school. I actually attended St. Mary Magdalene School in Kawit Cavite and we once toured the house of Emilio Aguinaldo there. So I presume they have still preserved that house there? Is that what you guys are referring to?
Nice photos, btw. And Happy Independence Day.- Señor Enrique said...
Hi Irene!
I suggest you visit Ricky's site. He has wonderful pictures of Aguinaldo's house!
Thanks!- said...
Our school system seems to be getting too secular. Wish the Sec of Education goes back to the old ways. And if some students didn't want to participate because of religious beliefs, then it's their loss..hehe. Yessss, those old school songs does brings back good old memmories.
Come to think, the wordings doesn't literally translates to the english version and vice-versa, but on second thought, who cares..rhymes are great. Inspiring photos as usual. Cheers.- carlotta1924 said...
naunahan nyo ko sa pag post nung song hehe.=)
sa mga "national songs" natin, ito ang pinakagusto ko. learned this in grade 4, i think.- Señor Enrique said...
Way back in elementary schol, I think we only sang the English version of this song, which I now find odd, TruBlue :)

Fourth grade, Carla? I believe we were thought this song from Grade One; along with the beginning rudiments of the English language with Dick and Jane -- "See Spot run. Run, run, run!" -- hehehe!

Those are superb photos, Eric!
Since you lived most of your years in NYC, I wonder if you are familiar with "Bayan Ko"?
Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag.
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa.
Ibon mang may layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
Ang di magnasang makaalpas!
Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha ko't dalita
Aking adhika,
Makita kang sakdal laya!
It's a beautiful song, and had been identified as some sort of 'theme song' of the leftists and radicals.- said...
And if I remember right, this song was also banned during the long Marcos martial law regime, that you could get arrested just by singing it!

More P.S.
There's a prologue to this Bayan Ko sung by activists before:
Kay sarap mabuhay, sa sariling bayan
Kung walang alipin, at may kalayaan.
Ang bayang inaapi, bukas ay babangon din
Ang silanga'y pupula, sa landas ng paglaya!
I also took the streets one time in my life, chanting.. Marcos, dictador, tuta! Hehehe....- said...
More pahabol, Eric, I googled this, to aid my failing memory on "Bayan Ko" song:
"This song has accompanied almost every struggle since the turn of the century to recapture the visions and ideals of the First Republic -- from the anti-American protest movement and millenarian revolts of the 1920's and 30's, to the resistance against the Japanese occupation in the 40's, the student revolt of the 70's and more recently, the 1986 "People's Power" revolt that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.
Original Tagalog lyrics by Jose Corazon de Jesus, melody by Constancio de Guzman."- Señor Enrique said...
Wow! So this is a vintage protest song then, huh? Amazing.
Unfortunately, haven't heard it all, Rhoda, though the lyrics seem intensely nationalistic.
Many thanks for sharing with us all this significant information, Rhoda!- sheilamarie said...
hi eric! i'm more familiar with the song "Bayan Ko" that Rhodora mentioned. Will try to listen to the song you have posted.
We celebrated the Independence Day here in Nigeria yesterday. It was well worth the long trip to Ikeja, and even the heavy rain didn't stop the people from enjoying the day =)- -= dave =- said...
Thanks for recommending my entry, Señor E!
As for the songs, I'm not familiar with the song you shared. Perhaps I might remember if I hear it sung. On the other hand, I know Bayan Ko. The second part of this song is the pitfall of amateur singers (read: piyok).- said...
ang ganda talaga ng pagkapicture mo ng flags!

Hi Sheilamarie,
Since they made Monday, June 11, the non-working holiday, and Tuesday, June 12 (the real Independence Day) as a working day, not too many people got to enjoy the festivities that were presented on Tuesday :( Sayang talaga!
I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday over there!- Señor Enrique said...
It's a belautiful song, Dave. I'm sure your parents would still know this by heart :)
That was a good entry, Dave. I enjoyed it very much!- Señor Enrique said...
Many thanks, Dine!!!

Thanks, Kyels.
The song has a melancholy feel to it, but I guess it only made it even more endearing.- Señor Enrique said...
Hi Pusa!
Thanks and trust you had a wonderful holiday yourself :)
