Eric! This is torture! LOL! Now I want to go out and have some.

I firmly believed that if you didn't identify that type of fruit and made us guess, most of us would say "young coconuts"!! Then again, probably most of the females will figure it out as "santol" coz of the salt sprinkled over them... Nice pic yet so deceiving, to me at least..
Goodhealth.....- said...
wowwww, sarap! that reminds me, kakain ako ng santol mamaya. woohoo! =)

I'm staring and I'm salivating now!

my mouth is full of saliva now. i have not had a santol in what seem like a lifetime. penge naman oh.

Hahaha, naging beho na ako, tulo laway at nangangasim ang tiyan.
Man!, that's torture to us here where we can only get a santol in pictures. Meron atang frozen, but not the same one na nilalako sa kalye in Pinas with asin and I love santol with bagoong also.- Gita Asuncion said...
ayayay! na ooverwork ang salivary glands ko, senorE!
but people, have you tried the ginataang santol of the bicolanos! thats one dish na sobrang mawawala ka sa sarili mo, grabe!
for those visiting bicol soon, try this. a bicolana friend cooked this for us one time and ever since, we await eagerly for santol season every year! hahaha...- said...
Wah! Nangasim ako dun ah!

Nakakapaglaway naman ito Sir!

Hi Rhoda!
I just thought I'd lighten things up a bit -- considering the past couple of postings were sort of a buffet offering for the intellect, while the last was somewhat political and could raise someone's blood pressure.
So, a picture of these peeled, salted, and ready to enjoy bunch of santol would make a great diversion.
I had no idea it end up torturing my blog friends instead ... hehehe. Sorry.
:)- Señor Enrique said...
Thanks, TruBlue! Let me ask you, when was the last time you enjoyed some of this local fruit?
They're at present commonly found in the streets and markets of Manila.- Señor Enrique said...
Hi Carla,
Must one first have a meal before indulging in this fruit, or can you enjoy them even with an empty stomach?
Anyway, I'm sure you enjoyed some santol today :)- Señor Enrique said...
Hahahaha ... thanks for being a sport, Kyels!
- Señor Enrique said...
I'd FedEx a bunch over your way, Photo Cache, but I'm afraid they wouldn't be allowed to be transported to the States as they are. Maybe as preserves, huh?
- Señor Enrique said...
I don't think cutting open a package of some frozen santol comes near to the excitement of peeling and then salting the fruit yourself, Reyd ... hahaha!
- Señor Enrique said...
If you're in Manila right now, Ferdz, I'm sure there'd be no problem in your finding a cart of santol nearby ... hehehe.
- Señor Enrique said...
Yes, I've had that dish, Gita! More often when as a kid. My mother is from Bicol; grandmother would cook a dish whenever visiting us in Manila! I remember it as simply delicious.
- Señor Enrique said...
Ako rin nga, Ricky, kanina pa rin ... hehehe.
- said...
Ulam ba 'yung ginataang santol or appetizer? Siguro maanghang siya!
- Señor Enrique said...
Ulam, Rhoda. My grandmother used to make two versions, one was spicy :)

After the aratiles and Indian mango trees were felled or rendered fruitless by successive typhoons through the years, picking santol is the last tree-related bonding activity I had with my childhood friends.
I like the large variety because it's sweet. Hm, I'm from Bicol, but I haven't heard of ginataang santol (or maybe I've just forgotten).- said...

:)- said...
hehehe... naglalaway na ako..

Ayaay! Sumakit ang panga ko sa pangangasim! :)
- Watergirl said...
Salivate I did! How pavlovian! Excuse me while I wipe the drool...
I love santol marinated in vinegar, onions, salt (and some siling labuyo for that added kick).- Señor Enrique said...
Maybe the "ginataang santol" was not originally indigenous to the Bicol region after all, Dave. Becasue I have another Bicolano friend who hasn't tasted it, either.
But for those interested for its recipe:

Hello Traje!
I found a recipe at Lutong Bahay:

Please try it and let us all know what you think of this dish, ok?
Thanks :)- Señor Enrique said...
Our house in the barrio of Subic had kaimito trees along both sides of the driveway, Pete. And boy, did they abundantly bear fruits.
What I didn't like about this setup were the times I'd be playing with my cousins and all of a sudden a fruit would fell off and hit me on the head or on my back.
They were so plentiful that most would just fall on the ground, swept and thrown out.
However, I don't remember ang amoy ng kata ng prutas na ito :(- Señor Enrique said...
Dalandan and sinigwelas are also in season nowadays, Reyd. Daming mga vendor sa Quiapo niyan ngayon :)
- Señor Enrique said...
Ako nga, Rhodyl, tuwing madadaanan ang mga vendor na yan naglalaway na din agad ... hahaha.
- Señor Enrique said...
LAR, dami sa palengke nito di ba? Hahaha. Kasi kung iisipin lalo lang sasakit ang mga panga. Buti pang kumain na lang :)
- Señor Enrique said...
Wow! I have got to try that concoction, M. Tan!
Thanks!- sheilamarie said...
oh ghad! i haven't been able to eat my fave santol for more than two years now as it's not in season when we go home =(
santol with salt or bagoong.. sigh...
my uncle next door has a santol tree, so we grew up eating the sweet fruit yearly. then to suddenly be deprived of it.. what sorrow!!!!
p.s. i'm starting to salivate here just looking at your photo! LOL!- said...
many tnx senor, got the recipe na,at pinaluto ko na s nanay ko...graaabee...may bad news nga lang"SIRA ANG DIET"sa sobrang yummy ma-papakain ka tlaga!!!whew;)
- Señor Enrique said...
You should have brought some santol seeds to plant in Nigeria, Sheilamarie :)
Santol with bagoong? Whoa! Laway na ako ... hehehe!- Señor Enrique said...
Ang daya, Traje! Akala namin ikaw mismo magluluto, ano pala ang nanay mo!
Hindi din nag-invite ... hehehe!- said...
Naglaway na ako just by looking at the pictures. Bakit nga kaya santol gives you that reaction ano? And to think that I haven't had one in so many years, it seems that I still remember what it tastes like. And doesn't it make your hand sticky when you peel it. Sort of the same thing sayote does to your hands?
- Señor Enrique said...
Para bang naka-hard-wired sa brain natin, Irene. Ako nga ng nasa NYC remember distinctly the taste and texture of santol. At this very moment, naglalaway na naman ako ... hahaha!

OH my... I didn't realize how I miss santol until I saw this photo!
I found your blog through Sheliah's Buhay Buhay. I added you to my links. I'd be back for more!- Señor Enrique said...
Hi Minnote!
I wonder why no one ever thought of planting santol in the warmer states of America. I'm sure it'll thrive there as well.- Señor Enrique said...
Do you live in Maui? Whoa! Nice :)
I had just visiterd your site as well as your Nanay's and Tatay's. I bookmarked them both.
Cheers!
