My high school, TruBlue, was so left brain-oriented the only artsy extra curricular activity it offered was a glee club, which I signed up for during my freshman year. Other than that there was the Math Club, Chess Club, Physics Club, Chemist Club, and Science Club. They all seemed to have the same members.

At least the brew gave you all a good time, eh, TruBlue :)

Yes, this was a free concert!

Yes, Carla, these pics were from yesterday's perfomance. Lots more in the program, but I had to leave early.

Very talented young people. I bet the school is similar to the New York High School for the Performing Arts (remember the "Fame" movie?).

I admire the people who kept this program going, kahit alam naman nating malayo pa ang lalakbayin natin to make our kababayan aware of this kind of art. Nice pics.

Perhaps, we as bloggers, Ricky, can help out by promoting their endeavors. Alam mo naman na, pagnagkaisa-isa ang mga bloggers ay may lakas silang malawak na ikalat ang mga balita :)

I've only heard of this school last night, Mimi. But how I wish I could've stayed for the entire show because they were all quite amazing!

Sana natupad ang pangarap mo, no?

Eric, this Philippine School for the Arts was put up as a counterpart of the Philippine Science High School. It is not easy to be admitted to this school as one has to take various written and talent tests in order to qualify. It's relatively new compared to Phil Science High.

Love the pics, very colorful, so festive... but I'm still feeling very sad... miss my daughter so much, she's now in Manila, we left her there yesterday. :(

Aha! So this is the right brain-oriented counterpart of the Philippine Science High School in which our fellow blogger, Corsarius, was a graduate of.

Well, let me tell you, Rhoda, these kids really put on a wonderful show! They're our future national artists :)

I have loved watching Concert In The Park concert on TV for years but lately, I have lost track of its schedule--if ever they are still showing it on NBN.

The dances are becoming more and more exquisite and the dancer's costume are more varied right now---they are simply better than years ago.

Great vibrant pictures, Eric.

According to the program (flyer) they handed out as we entered the auditorium, the concerts are aired still over NBN-Channel 4, Major Tom.

I have to check out this channel; don't know day/time they are shown.

Thanks, Rey!

Did my share of folk dancing as well during elementary which I enjoyed immensely :) None in my high school :(

Lovely pictures, Eric! I like watching folk/cultural dances.

Cheers for the performers =D

p.s. they do air on t.v. the programs done in this theater. Usually in the afternoon, I think.

I remember back in my sixth grade, this school and PSHS went to our class as part of their recruitment blitz. Of course I tried PSHS (for the sake of experience since I know which high school I would want to go). I got past the first batch of tests but failed in the second. How far behind was my education? Well, I finally figured out how to answer the test questions only in my second year in high school.

really wonderful pics. in my day, our prof would assign one concert at the park presentation as part of our required "reading" (sort of). we were too young to appreciate art so we would go and pick up one of their programmes, stay a maximum of 15 minutes or one song or one piece, then leave and base our critque on the programme. hahahaha.

I remember seeing this Concert at the Park when I was a kid in a TV show. And until now, I haven't seen it live still. Neat photos, I love that expression on the kid.

Glad to know that "Concert in the Park" is still on. I used to go there to watch the school rondallas play as well as the classical music ensembles from different colleges. Teodoro "Doroy" Valencia was the guy who kept the concerts alive during Marcos's days. The Cultural center's little theater used to be the venue also for free jazz concerts both classical and contemporary. The US Embassy's Thomas Jefferson Cultural Library in Makati also sponsored a lot of performing arts show for free.

Hi Sheilamarie!

For their finale, they performed the Tinikling which I haven't seen in quite some time :(

Wish I could have stayed the rest of the evening to enjoy it.

I didn't see any TV cameras, and this is why I can't figure out how they're able to show the concert on TV. Perhaps, I wasn't paying attention.

Not only that, Lino, you can also take pictures! Hehehe. Actually, they encourage folks to do so.

I wonder if you had actually past those series of tests, Dave and attended the school. I bet you'd now be involved in some playwriting projects at CCP :)

I didn't realize they were a bunch of smart kids. Thought they were just doing it for fun :)

Many thanks, Punkyliciousss!

I hope so, too. But then again we as bloggers can help them out. It's actually a very good idea for our local folks (especially our young) to be exposed at such quality performances :)

Thank you, Ipanema! I was suprised to have just discovered that we do have specialized schools in the realm of the arts. Science I knew, but performing arts, just now.

Oh, my! And I bet Photo Cache that at the end you lost out because these performances are truly wonderful :)

I plan to regularly attend these concerts from now on.

Thanks much, Dine!

Don't know much about this school; this is actually the first I heard of it.

Hmmmm... may be one of these days, I'll request information to take some pictures in the school itself -- sort of a documentation of life in this artsy school. Maybe your neighbor can advise who I should call for permission.

This year is its 30th anniversary.

It's not such a bad place, Ferdz. Reminds me of a mini version of LA's Hollywood Bowl ... hehehe.

But do check it out with some friends on a Sunday. You'll enjoy it.

Jazz ... now that's what I'd like to check out, Pete! But the only performances in the city charge an arm and a leg :(

They ought to have more free jazz concerts like the ones you used to attend around town!

Me again (g). These kids are not just talented, they're brave and independent! I cant imagine myself being away from my parents at such age =). And to stay sa 'bundok,' so to say, ng matagal.

The school is in Mt. Makiling, near UP Los Banos. I was privileged to stay there for 2 days and a night and interview some of those kids who might now be as successful as Raymond Red or Maria Taniguchi...

Sayang din, I learned about this school nga when I was in college....but then as I mentioned earlier hindi ko siguro kaya na malayo sa parents hehehe...

I've a feeling that most of these kids entering this school feel the way you did, Anonymous. I've never met anyone who wanted to be away from his comfortable home and parents for quite an extended amount of time. But I am sure the school administrators are quite aware of this, so I bet they make the overall school curriculum and extra curricular activities as enjoyable and exciting to these homesick kids.

I only wish that I had stayed for their entire performance that evening.

hey, I'm glad you loved the performances my school/batchmates did in the concert at the park. It's the best reward we student artists could receive :) Yeah, it's hard for a number of us to be away from our family, but some like the independence... someone like meee :) . In the end, we all grow to love it here more than at home coz it's so clean and peaceful. I mean, we're on top of Mt. Makiling! On top of Los Banos!

I've met the best people here in this school. It's so diverse! Students from parts of Luzon, Visayas and even Mindanao! Kudos to those who live far away. I only live in Paranaque which is easy coz the bus drops us every friday in CCP. From there, I get picked up by my dad. Others are cooler coz they commute. At the age of 13 or so, they commute! And they're not even from around the area. Awesome!!!

If you want to learn more about our school, I'm a senior student there, you can e-mail me at blackalarice@yahoo.com.ph I'd be happy to tell my experiences. You could also go to http://phsa.edu.ph (if it's still running hehehe)

I'm a visual arts major so we take up all fields under it like pottery, painting, sculpting, printing, etc.

ooook, I've said enough, hahaha forgive the blabbering, but I just want to promote the arts in our cultured and talented country. Hopefully the government will do more for us and recognize the arts.

Strive for originality and preservation of our fine and one of a kind culture!

Peace... ok, bye

Hello Anonymous!

Firstly, many thanks for dropping by and leaving a note! That was some performance at Rizal Park in which your school provided, but I am so sorry I couldn't stay for the entire show. Believe me, I regret it.

Will you be doing another show in Manila sometime soon?

If not, if I could find a friend to drive out there in Mt. Makiling, I'd love to photograph and feature another one of your school's performance.

I'm sure you had already noticed that a number of my blog friends wished or had actually tried to get into your fine school!

Okay, take care and good luck with your studies!

Eric
