BOTTOMLESS JOY

Never mind the hilarious clowns, skewered mini hotdogs with marshmallows, plateful of spaghetti, and a piece of the luscious chocolate cake. What the guests at this children's birthday were eagerly waiting for was the dirty ice cream.

And when it was announced that the line has been started for it, all the kids screamed with great joy. There were three flavors served: mango, cheese and ube. And most delightful of all, the kids were encouraged by the host for a second and third helping!

Surely, a wonderful time was had by all, especially by the one-year-old birthday celebrant.

I am no longer a child, but had I been there at that party, I would have joined them in yelling, ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM!!!!

You cant imagine how much I missed dirty ice cream.

BTW, because of your mango post a while back, I hunted down some green and ripe mangoes at the Asian supermarket and let the taste take me back to my good old hometown. Thanks.

Yay..dirty ice cream. My favorite flavor would have to be cheese. And I've developed a liking for ice cream on a hamburger bun. Alam mo nung high school ang tawag namin dyan ay "cholera ice cream."

if i would be in that party, I would immediately line up with the kids :-)...joking aside, I would just ask the sorbetero to give me a double in secret (haha!)and stash it. Of course, save some balloons for me, as well ;-)!
As a kid, I would always save my money either for dirty ice cream or iced gulaman!
Nice black and white touch to the kiddies' party---parang retro! It can even be MY party :-D!

The folks who threw this children's party was astonished that the kids ignored the chocolate cake. They only wanted the ice cream ... hehehe.

Perhaps, next time you come home for a visit, you may want to tak a class on making sorbetes, Photo Cache.

How were the mangoes you got there?

Ice cream sandwich is also a favorite of mine, Cookie! Any flavor is fine with me as long as it's dirty ice cream. Darn, I might have one later on ... hehehe.

Thought presenting this photo essay in black and whit would give it more of a photojourn feel, Bernadette. I saw myself in the faces of these children when the sorbetero arrived, and later on when he started serving his delicious ice cream.

The adults were served last but some of them had coffee mugs, not cones, which were filled with ice cream. It was all right since there was more than enough ice cream on that day.

The dirty ice cream really made that party :)

Ice cream is definitely staple in any birthday party - for young and old alike.

Last year, on my dad's birthday, we brought two gallons, and my nephew brought another gallon - making it three gallons of ice cream in all. It was only a family affair - kami-kami lang, but was I so surprised to find out - when I wanted to have some helping of ice cream - ubos na! I was just wondering... hey.. where did all that ice cream go? Then I saw my kids, nephews and nieces grinning, and I knew! :D

It's really more economical and practical and more enjoyable at that, to have a cart of ice cream on kiddie parties. Parang mas sumasarap pag may sorbetero na nagi-scoop at nag-aabot. It gives more delight and excitement, na parang - "hey, here's mamang sorbetero - he will give you lots of ice cream". Kasi on ordinary days - nakakabitin yung 10 pesos a cone lang, di ba. So - you're right - bottomless joy nga. :D

Lol ... I'm not surprised at all, Rhoda. Ice cream does go fast whenever there are youngsters around :)

Tama! Mas exciting ang may ice cream cart at Mamang Sorbetero at a party because they project a dream-like scenario -- free ice cream!

Thanks, BW!

Except for the dirty ice cream, I'm sure the popular Pinoy brand ice cream are now available at Pinoy stores where you are :)

Awww, look at the faces of those children. Nakakatuwa talaga! Reminds me of when we first went home to the Philippines after being away for 20 years. I asked my brother to gather some poor children from church so we could give away candies and old toys. He brought in about 30 kids. I remember this one particular little girl who was so shy that she just stood in line very quietly unlike the rest of the children who were jumping and carrying on from excitement. When she got in front of the line, she started to shake from anticipation and I felt so sorry for her, I picked her up and put her in my lap and hug her until the shaking subsided. When I finally put her down, she went "Ang bango bango po ninyo". I was potty her in her hands after that.

After we've distributed the candies and toys, my brother arranged for the sorbetero to give the kids sorbetes. My safety and health conscious husband was like "what if they have food poisoning, what if..... what if....You could get sued." I did it any way and then all the old folks were eating them too. Everybody was egging him to try it and so he finally gave in. Now, that is the first thing he looks for when we go back. He tries anything now except for balut and dinuguan. But then, that's another story in itself.

I love little children. They are so innocent. That is the stage when worries are so few and smiles are a-plenty.

Beautiful pictures, Eric. You captured the innocence of those children.

Very touching act of kindness, Pat. Thank you for sharing.

Love your story about your husband and dirty ice cream ... lol :)

I told the host of this children's party that these kids -- on account of the sorbetero and ice cream cart -- will never forget this wonderful experience.

Mny thanks, Pat! Glad you enjoy these pics. By the way, I had three helpings :)
