SUMMER IN THE CITY

For those stuck in the city this weekend like me, with the current record-breaking summer heat, there are basically only two things to do: either stay home and enjoy the comfort of one's home, or go out anyway and find something fun to do.

Although the new Spiderman movie seems to the most popular choice this weekend for most, there are also other activities going on in and around Manila worth checking out. Here's a sampling:

Harp Music Performance at Pan Pacific
by Holly Angel Paraiso
at the Lobby every Friday at 6 pm
Adriatico corner Malvar Streets at Malate, Manila
Telephone: 536-0788

World Press Photo Exhibition
A selection of 200 photographs comprising the winning photos
in the annual World Press Photo Competition
The Podium (Ortigas)
until May 8th

Fiction and Non-fiction Writing Lecture and Workshop
by Ricky Lee
Filipinas Heritage Library
Nielson Tower, Makati Avenue
Telephone: 892-1801

Yoshinoya Edo Kite Festival
Exhibition and competitions at 2 pm
Ateneo de Manila Football Field
Loyola Heights, Quezon City

Flores de Mayo
May 6 at 5 pm
Rajah Solaiman Park at Baywalk
Roxas Boulvard
- Malate, Manila
Telephone: 524-8311

Obviously, I am not one to merely stay home this weekend. I intend to defy the scorching summer heat and go out -- to take some pictures, nonetheless.

Incidentally, that picture above of a grand staircase was taken inside the old Finance Building which is now the home of the National Museum. Speaking of which, there's a couple of ongoing exhibitions in the museum that you may want to check out as well:

Flora Filipina - from Acapulco to Manila
Identifies the plants that were introduced to
the Philippines from Mexico.

Building Modernity: A Century of Philippine Architecture and Allied Art
Imparts the history of Philippine architecture from
the American period to the present.

National Museum
Padre Burgos Street, Manila
Telephone: 527-0278

That's a staircase is really grand. Sarap talaga sa Manila... you'd never run out of things to do. I wish I could attend Ricky Lee's workshop.

As much as I'd like to go out and have some fun, I just can't stand the heat. Also, I'm sick so it's a good idea to stay at home. Nice pic!

Thanks, Lino!

Guess, you're seriously raking in some serious money from overtime work so you can buy those great photography gears, huh? Hehehe.

Yes, Flores de Mayo seems enticing :)

Yes, Toe, a writing workshop sounds interesting, but I think I'd prefer a month-long one. I can really use practical tips :)

I fell in love with that staircase the moment I saw it about a year ago when I came to visit this museum for the very first time. I finally got the opportunity to photograph it last Monday :)

The heat can be sickening, indeed, Baddie. Hope you feel better.

Perhaps, this is an ideal time for you to write more entries about your DVD collection :)

Eric, this is what I envy most - something people in Manila can enjoy while their provincial cousins drool. So many cultural and artistic activities ongoing ... just what we need to feed our hunger for knowledge.

you look like you have gimiks this wkend. nice list of activities. we may have the same taste senor. although, a time off spent on the beach is not bad, either. that pic is so elegant. happy weekend.

Hi Bugsy!

What amazes me is that although the large cities in our provinces may not be as populous as Manila, there is still enough people in every town to sustain these kind of cultural activities. I think it's because no one believes enough that our provincial counterparts would actually patronize such offerings.

Ah, the beach is always the ideal respite from the summer heat, Photo Cache, but the real nice ones are quite a distance away from Manila. The swimming pools in Laguna are the next best thing for most young Manilans.

Thanks and you have a nice weekend, too!

The kite festival is this weekend, Daisy -- Saturday and Sunday!

But I think 2pm would be too hot to be outside, no?

I also love that staircase, eric.

It will be raining here the entire weekend so we will be just staying at home. I'm working overtime on Sat. too.

My kids want to see the Spiderman movie but I told them to wait at least until next weekend or the next after that. Marami pa kasing tao.

When is your school over, Kyels? I thought you were already enjoying your summer vacation at this time.

I thought you'd like that staircase, Irene. I don't think I'd have anything like that should I be so fortunate to build a dream house, but I love that staircase anyway.

Hmmm... I wonder if the boys would be willing to wait that much longer to see Spiderman. You know, half the excitement is being part of a large audience.

With the change of season comes the rain so, good idea to stay at home this weekend then.

Mention of summer days in the old homeland makes me feel hot again.

Those last two months for me were like spent in a Turkish sauna. Many locals said the hottest they have seen in many years.

Glad to be back to a more temperate climate, though summer is approaching here, too.

i also love grand staircases. have you seen the ones in the post office and el hogar in binondo?

and yeah, i posted a lot of pics in my blog from my trip here in houston. i'm leaving for tampa today. =)

Some people are attributing this record-breaking Philippine heatwave to global warming, Amadeo.

But back in NYC, there could be weeks during the summer when the temperature hit the 100 mark as well. But then again, I find the hot weather a lot more manageable than the extreme cold.

Hi Carla!

Don't think I've heard of El Hogar before, but the post office I know where it is and should drop by to check out its staircase.

Will check your pics now :)

thanks for the list, quite interesting. and my guess was right about the grand staircase.

except for 1 trip to mall of asia a few days ago, a movie in gateway, and you guessed it right--spidey, snacks in Choco Kiss in UP, a few trips to Chow King and Little Quiapo for the halo halo, i opted to remain holed up in my airconditioned room at home. i do not like summer because of its sweltering heat. too bad when there are a hundred and one things to explore! i'd do the exploring on a rainy day.

Hi Sexy Mom!

Don't really blame you for keeping comfortable inside your house. The heat can be overwhelming!

But the halo-halo is worth getting out of the house for even for a short time :)

Cool! Hope to see some photos in one of those events. I was able to visit the World Press Photo at the Podium last Friday, impressive yung mga photos dun!

Make sure you got proper sun protection though when you go out :D

I have got to see the World Press Photo exhibit, Ferdz. Glad to hear that it's an impressive collection.

It was late afternoon when I went out to take pictures of the Flores de Mayo event at Roxas Boulevard so it wasn't that uncomfortably hot anymore :)

When at last I have the chance to stay longer in Manila, I will visit the places you have featured here. I also plan to see art exhibits, museums, attend events, watch plays, watch concerts, watch Manila Bay sunset, even watch Senate hearings... hahaha! Ano ba ito, baka hilain na akong pauwi ng hubby ko! LOL! Sabi nga ni Gem, ako daw ang mas excited na mag-aral siya sa Manila, para may excuse akong mamasyal.

Gem may have a valid point there, Rhoda. But then again, why not? You deserve to enjoy life as much as you can, especially now that the youngest is in college.

Hey, when you do interviews in the Senate, you know who to call to document the event.
