DANCING UNDER THE STARS IN QUIAPO
It would probably take an act of God to find Z.P. de Guzman Street completely free of people. Located only a block from Quezon Boulevard east of Quiapo Church, it is comprised mostly of residences, with some converted to rooming houses. And because of the private high school and technical college near its northern end -- along with the rows of reasonably priced but surprisingly tasty eateries -- the street attracts a continuous flow of pedestrians.
In the late afternoon when the sun is no longer as searing, Guzman swarms even more with foot traffic that peaks during the early evening when the neighborhood kids, home from school, make a playground out of its entire stretch -- the gleeful screams from their dizzying plays compete against the oftentimes off key singing blasting from the bistros' videoke machines; the resulting cacophony lending a festive air until the late night.
The street is divided into two separate barangay zones, with both having women as captains, which may explain the plentiful organized youth activities in the area, including regular feeding programs. And besides the inter-barangay basketball competition that is now going on, one of the barangays, No. 394, hosted a dance contest last weekend.
Ranging in age from four to late teens, about 15 groups competed for the top prize of 5,000 pesos. There were no entry fees involved so as to encourage as many kids as possible to participate. Moreover, with official permission from the barangay office, the kids were allowed to solicit money for their costumes from the neighborhood residents and business owners; hence, making the event more like a community effort.
In the end, with every dancer bringing much joy to the appreciative crowd, every competitor was deemed a winner. Needless to say, the event was a great success.

THE MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR OPENS TODAY
These photos were taken today, Friday, at the 29th Manila International Book Fair at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia complex.

29TH MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
Better mark your calendar for the 29th Manila International Book Fair.
It will be held at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia complex on September 12 to 16 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily.
Besides getting discounts on hundreds of titles, there will also be planned events to give the public a chance to interact with some popular and promising upcoming authors. There will be features as well on the most promising books published in the past year, including a special forum on books on Philippine regional literature, education, politics, religion, family, psychology, philosophy, the social sciences, business and technology.
In addition, there will be opportunities to listen to daily poetry readings and storytelling, hear writers tell their stories, and attend the series of writing workshops offering help and advice on writing for adults and children.

A WEDDING FAUX PAX
Under normal circumstances, this bride and groom would have been the center of attraction. But in this particular occasion, as evidenced by this photograph, the couple appeared more of a nuisance to the crowd fixated on enjoying the grand parade along Roxas Boulevard at that very moment.Apparently, whoever was their wedding coordinator, he or she failed to check the list of major events in Manila scheduled on that day; otherwise, another locale would've been suggested to shoot a picture of the newly-weds with Manila Bay’s glorious sunset as backdrop. In so doing, the bride would have been spared undue stress on her already frail nerves.
Nevertheless, this couple was able to eventually cross unharmed and proceed with their intended photo shoot. Believe it or not, there were three other newly-wed couples who, unfortunately, suffered the same fate along the boulevard on that festive day.

MANILA'S LABOR DAY RALLY
"We need higher wages!" cried thousands of demonstrators comprised of overworked, underpaid and disgruntled workers and government employees. Along with activists, they marched on Claro M. Recto Avenue but were prevented from proceeding to Malacanang Palace by law enforcement officers.
